TRIBAL SISTERHOOD RETREAT

The Kingdom of Morocco

What is the retreat about?

This retreat is all about expanding our sisterhood across the world, nourishing our souls, loving ourselves and those close to us and learning all about ancient traditions and techniques to 'mother the mother'.

Closing the Bones/ceremonies is normally accredited to coming from Mexico, however it is also a common tradition in Morocco especially amongst the traditional local Qablas 'midwives'. In Morocco we have rich traditions, culture, rituals and folklore which has been passed down orally through generations of families.

My family come from a small city in the North of Morocco where everybody knows everybody. I have been learning with an amazing traditional Qabla who comes from a lineage of at least four generations of healers; the sacred wisdom was passed on to her by her mother in law, who was the Qabla for my grandmother and aunties.

Not only is this a retreat, but an opportunity to learn, see, feel and experience first hand the 6 stages of traditional Moroccan Postpartum wisdom directly from native people of the land, such as Layla B. and the traditional qablas.

By the end of the retreat you will have the oportunity to certify, by The Nafsa Project School, as an Advanced Traditional Postpartum Doula (if you want to) to offer and share the wisdom with the new mothers that you serve, wherever you may be.

I have always had a deep passion to empower and encourage women in all walks of life. It is such a demanding but rewarding job being a pre/post- natal professional and you always focus on mothering the mother, this my sisters is your time to be mothered by myself and the team.

As a mother, traditional postpartum trainer, entrepreneur, founder of The Nafsa Project and the Layla B brand; I know how important it is to create a tight knit sisterhood and invest in oneself.

By joining this retreat, you will be saying YES to bloom your skills and life in beautiful ways. You will meet other amazing women who will support you and stand by your side. You will be saying YES to you.

Maat's Testimonial

Note from Layla B.
{ your host }

My background has always been in business, events, marketing, banking, charity work and entrepreneurship. I never ever once imagined that I would be in the 'birth' world, but with passion anything is possible.

After the birth of my first child in January 2014, my negative experience led me to learn more about positive birth options and I trained as a childbirth educator, doula, baby massage instructor, hypnobirthing teacher, active birth facilitator and studied with traditional postpartum midwives in Morocco.

My desire to combine my business background with the birth world merged well together, which led me to found and organise international conferences, trainings, workshops and retreats.

I know that when women get together and stand together, great things happen and we can empower, educate and encourage one another.

I hope you join us!

Advanced Traditional Postpartum Doula Training

With our mission to revive, reclaim and restore sacred and ancient Moroccan postpartum wisdom, we are sharing our training with the world.
If you are not interested in certifying that is absolutely fine, you may still join the retreat and experience it all.

For those who want to certify and possibly offer services to clients you need to complete the online 'The Nafsa Project School' course to certify as a Traditional Postpartum Doula. The course will be offered as a bonus (free) for you and fully online which you can take at your own pace at your home.

The course will be based on my six stages of Moroccan postpartum healing.

Once you complete both the online course and the retreat, you may certify as an Advanced Traditional Postpartum Doula, as you will have experienced it all, completed the workshops, learned about the culture, practiced together and been on the sisterhood journey.

The retreat is a practical experience, where you will also get to practice and experience cooking, the hamam, belly binding and closing of the bones for yourselves.

You can then be listed on our directory and offer services to the women in your community.

Workshops

SACRED POSTPARTUM WISDOM
workshop1.png

In this introductory workshop we discuss the Moroccan culture, lifestyle, customs, rituals, herbs and 6 stages of postpartum tradtions.

Honour Her

Welcome Her

Nourish Her

Nurture Her

Close Her

Celebrate Her

NOURISH HER: Postpartum Cooking Class

In this workshop we will discover the most used and important Moroccan postpartum herbs, spices, foods and drinks. We will then learn to make the most famous, nourishing and delicious postpartum Moroccan dish. We will make a veg and vegan option as well and then share the dish together for lunch. Some of the ingredients in the one dish are listed below:

Organic Chicken

Ras Al Hanoot (a blend of about 30 spices)

Lentils, Onion, Garlic

Parsley, Fenugreek, Corriander

Boiled eggs

Special homemade 'bread'

NURTURE HER: THE HAMAM
workshop3.png

Heard about the Moroccan steam hamam? It is an amazing, nurturing steam bath where locals have washed themsleves for centuries. It is used traditionally for everyday use, brides and new mothers.

We will dive in and learn about the hamam, how it is done, what is used and the benefits. The best part is that you will also get to experience the hamam for yourself; where you will washed and scrubbed like a Queen. After your tea, you will get to experience a closing of the bones and then tuck into bed to soak it all in.

We will show you how Apple Mint is used in the hamam traditionally with hot stones and as a womb steam.

The hamam for the new mother is usually followed by a closing, which we will continue with on the other workshops.

CLOSE HER: CLOSING THE BONES & BELLY BINDING

Many of you may have heard of the Mexican Cerrada...Morocco also has a very similar (but different) version of closing the bones which is normally done after the hamam.

It is a beautiful ceremony/ritual/massage that helps the new mother heal and allows her body and bones slowly go back to their pre-pregnancy state. After the closing the belly is bound and if a traditional midwife was supporting the new mother this would take place a few times in the first week alone.

We will learn all about the Moroccan closing, how and why it is done. You will also get to receieve one and practice giving one, so that you can offer it to other new mothers around the world. Of course, you will also get to meet with a traditional Moroccan midwife (or two) herself, which will be a humbling, honouring and once in a lifetime experience.

workshop4.png

CELEBRATE HER: THE PARTY
workshop5.png

Traditionally the new mother was celebrated through nourishment, nurture, gatherings and naming ceremonies. We will look into the celebrations and traditions that the new mother got to enjoy along with family and friends.

Because I love giving, sharing and offering an authentic experience, you will be invited to our ladies only party where we will replicate a naming ceremony party. You will get to wear your custom made Moroccan caftan, adorned with henna, dance with the locals, eat traditional food, listen to the amazing live band which consists of about 10 women dressed to impress and drink mint tea carefully curated by a master tea maker right in front of you; also dressed to impress.

We will invite a new mother who can not afford to have a celebration, along with her friends to join us and celebrate HER! Now that is what I call sisterhood.

This will also be our farewell, graduation and initiation party, so that you are blessed and ready to revive, reclaim and restore!

STORYTELLING

Traditional qablas are wise women, and they have told me so many stories that I absolutely love spending time them and listening to their funny, sad, inspirational, amazing, shocking, happy and wisdom-full stories. Let's sit together in a circle, with mint tea in our hands, listen and share our own stories.

Ibn Battuta, a world famous Moroccan scholar and explorer, said that traveling leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller.

VISIT A TRADITIONAL QABLA
workshop7.png

We will have a traditional qabla (midwife) or two, visit us for a workshop to learn what she gets up to and show us some of the remedies and rituals she uses to help other women.

MIND, BODY & SOUL

As this is a retreat, you will have time to relax and reflect, to nourish your body, mind and soul with good food, exercise, free time, belly dance class, swimming, exploring, sister circle's, hamam steam bath, and amazing yoga classes.

LAYLA & TRADITIONAL MOROCCAN Qablas (MIDWIVES/healers)

The beauty of this trip will be getting to meet Moroccan local, traditional healers/midwives who have worked with hundreds and thousands of women and have generations of wisdom passed down to them.

We will listen to their stories, learn from them, eat with them and enjoy this unique and rare opportunity.

I, Layla B., have spent time learning with the traditional midwives and am very excited to pass on this knowledge and support other new mothers the world over.

Lucy's Testimonial

RETREAT LOCATION: MOROCCO!

Morocco is known as the land of history, culture, hospitality, nature, beauty and amazing food! Morocco is a kingdom of wonders that has so much to offer - four different mountain ranges march across the land, while golden beaches line a coast that borders both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara desert in the South. Throughout the land you'll find lush oases, rivers and hospitable people, it is truly a kingdom that rewards the curious, adventurous and the one seeking an unforgettable journey.

Famous artists and writers such as Bowles, Oliver Stone, Matisse and Delacroix made Tangier their home for parts of their lives. Ibn Battuta, world famous Moroccan explorer (buried in Tangier), said that traveling leaves you speechless and then turns you into a storyteller.

We will spend all the nights in a private villa in Asilah (with private pool, chef, hamam, amazing views) and go on evening and day tours to Tangier, Asilah and Chefchoauen. The Asilah villa has one room for 4 people sharing, another 2 rooms with 1 double bed and 1 single bed and 2 rooms with 3 single beds.

The weather in the North of Morocco during June is perfect for our adventure.

Join me in listening to stories and creating your own!

We will also have the chance to learn how to make a hearty Moroccan postpartum meal!

Breakfasts include (not limited to) fresh home made bread, home made pastries, pancakes, home made preserves, free range eggs, cheese, fresh olives and olive oil, natural honey, fresh fruits, cereals, juice, Moroccan tea (of course), coffee and so much more.

Lunch and dinner will range with salads, soups, appetisers, moroccan samosas, tagines, couscous, pulses, etc, everyday we will have different main courses (sometimes vegetarian, fish, chicken, beef, lamb etc).

Lunch will be a lighter buffet style meal and dinner will be a sit down meal sharing round the table (as most Moroccan families do).

Healthy snacks will also be available.

    FAQ's

    WHO IS THIS FOR?

Women who want to spend 7 nights away in Morocco with other amazing women, creating a sisterhood, establishing bonds, expanding our lives, connecting with locals, experiencing new adventures and sharing the journey together!

Women ready to live, love, laugh and lead! Women who want to learn and have the ability to serve other women. You have the opportunity to certify as a Advanced Traditional Postpartum doula, if you wish to, otherwise you can just enjoy the retreat and workshops.

    WHERE IS THE CLOSEST AIRPORT?

The best airport to arrive in is Tangier Boukhalef (TNG) airport. There are direct flights from London (usually Air Arabia) and other European cites (Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona are a few).

For those coming from further away there may not be any direct flights. If you can make a transfer in Europe and then continue to Tangier, that is great. If not, you can arrive to Casablanca airport and get the train or taxi to Tangier. It is a good idea to search on skyscanner or cheapoflights to get the best deals.

You can also get the ferry from Spain to Tangier.

CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THE TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS?

Yes we can most certainly help you! As soon as you make your first deposit we can help you search for the best flights and travel options to get you to Tangier safely and happily!

If there are a few people travelling from the same country, then we will put you in touch so perhaps you may travel together or meet up.

    CAN MY PARTNER/BABY COME?

The retreat is for adult women only, however for any special cases please get in touch with us.

DO YOU HAVE A FULL AGENDA OF THE TRIP?

We have a provisional agenda. Please click here to have a look.

DO WE HAVE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE EXERCISE CLASSES?

You do not have to, however it is advisable as it will involve a lot of relaxation, contemplation and is a great stress reliever! It will definitely make you feel better.

    IS THERE VEGETARIAN/VEGAN FOOD OPTIONS?

Yes there is, we will send out a questionnaire when you sign up, so we know what you like and dislike!

IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL ALONE TO MOROCCO?

Yes it is completely safe to travel alone to Morocco. In any case we will meet you in Tangier when you arrive and we will stay together for the entire time.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN THIS NOW?

Not only is this a great chance to explore Morocco, but this is a chance to invest in YOU, spend time and energy all on YOU. I personally also invest in myself as knowledge is power and sisterhood is my thing!

Most importantly this is a once in a life time opportunity to meet a traditional postpartum Qabla(s) from Morocco and learn together.

The question is: Why should you NOT join NOW :)

    CAN I AFFORD THIS?

This is an investment in yourself, you will find a way to make it happen! The reason we create our retreats is to bond together, smile, share, learn and be face-to-face with your mentors and tribe. There is nothing that can compare to live retreats and the experience they offer, which can be life changing if you embrace it!

We have a payment plan, so no excuses...

DO I HAVE TO WEAR FULLY COVERED CLOTHES IN MOROCCO?

No, you do not have to. Modest clothes is all that is required, Morocco is a Muslim country but also very modern, so you will see some people fully covered and some who are not. We will provide more details when you sign up.

    DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Yes you must purchase travel insurance to join this retreat, you can easily get a cheap deal online.

HOW DOES THE MOROCCAN HAMAM WORK?

It is an amazing traditional steam bath right inside our private villa in Asilah, 6-8 of us at a time will go inside, relax, soak up the steam, full body rub with special Moroccan olive oil soap, full body scrub, special masks, argan oil and you will feel brand new!

WHAT IS THIS PARTY WITH THE LOCALS ABOUT?

This will be our celebratory night before the end of the retreat! Moroccan weddings are truly spectacular and we want you to have a small experience of that. You will be dressed in your own custom made Moroccan caftan, we will get henna done, a traditional female music band dressed to impress, special traditional tea lady-making loads of tea live, wedding dinner feast, Moroccan sweets, Moroccan dancing and loads of fun memories. We will also invite some local women.

DO I HAVE TO DRINK LOTS OF MOROCCAN TEA?

Oh yes you do :) A lovely combination of green tea and mint, you will get served this tea all the time wherever we go!!

Don't worry, if you do not drink tea, we have lots of other options too (non-alcoholic though).

How do we certify as a Traditional Postpartum Doula and/or (Advanced)?

To certify, you will need to complete the online course before or after the retreat (if doing the retreat).
Do the tasks on the online course.
Create a resource list from your community.
If attending the retreat, you need to attend all the workshops and take part. All the details about the online course and certification can be found here: https://www.laylab.co.uk/tnps

    What happens after we certify?

After you certify you will be listed on our directory and you can start offering your services (for money) to families in your community.

You will get your digital certificate too and can join our FB group when you start the online course.

We have a 57 GBP re-certification fee, only if you wish to continue offering the services to women in your community. Most of it will be donated to women in Morocco, the rest used for the admin costs.
